World Charity Day: Why giving is good

Today marks the Sixth annual international day of charity.
The international day of charity is observed annually on September 5.
It is a day set aside by the United Nations to call the world’s attention to the need to care for the poor in the society.
The day is unique in many ways, apart from the fact that it is set aside to care for the needy, this day also coincides with the anniversary of mother Teresa, a woman widely acclaimed for her love in charity and acts of charity.
Acts of charity, whether it is devoting your time and effort or donating a sum of money, are the foundations of human society.
As we commensurate today, we take a look at why giving is good.
Giving is a Gift for the Giver
There is a common misconception that being charitable requires being rich. On the contrary, you do not need to be a billionaire to have the power to give to the needy.
A little can go a long way. No matter how much you give you can make a positive influence.
And the benefits go both ways. The act of giving is proven to make us feel happier and less stressed.
A 2008 study of more than 600 Americans examined how much they earned, their expenses and their charitable contributions.
The data showed that people who spent more of their money on other people — ‘prosocial spending’ — reported higher levels of happiness.
It appears that giving to others seems to be a natural happiness booster regardless of your wealth.
No wonder an Harvard Professor Michael Norton, says, ‘’If you think money can’t buy happiness, you’re not spending it right. Stop thinking about which product to buy for yourself, and try giving some of it to other people instead.’’

Giving gives life

Winston Churchill, a Former British politician once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Giving feels good and it does give life. Having the opportunity to give brings about fulfillment. We’ve all experienced that high from doing something good, donating our used books to the library, giving our clothes to those in need of it, calling or visiting an older relative, giving  someone gifts and even praying for others.
Seeing the smiles, gratitude and expressions of hope on the faces of those you are kind to makes the act of giving worthwhile.
The most important thing is deciding to give. The second most important thing is deciding what cause you want to support: Whether you are donating your time, possessions, money or all.
Giving helps others
If you're blessed with the means to live a reasonably comfortable life meaning, if you're able to read this, you have the ability to give.
There are people out there in need of so many things.
The little you give to them can go a long way in helping. The time you give, the money, your presence etc.

Giving is easy

There's so much that you can give. You can give your time, You can give your warmth and friendship, You can give a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on and, of course, you can give materially.
