Fake News: Become a 'CrossChecker'

Image
If ever there was a time to double check information gotten from social media, the time is now especially with the advent of technology and digital tools where anyone is allowed to create and disseminate information. A recent study analysed tweets from 2006-2017, specifically 126,000 stories (all debunked by fact-checking agencies) tweeted by about three million people more than 4.5 million times. The study however showed that a fake news item has got 70 percent possibility of being retweeted than real news, also the top 1 percent of fake news ultimately reached between 1,000 and 100,000 people (while the truth rarely reached more than 1,000 people). The spread of fake news is becoming alarming and it is important to know that you too can be a cross checker. Although spotting fake news is not very easy, there are some simple factors one could always look out for: Take a closer look at the headline . If the claims in the headline sounds unbelievable, do a quick verificat...

Today marks the Sixth annual international day of charity.   The international day of charity is observed annually on September 5. It is a day set aside by the United Nations to call the world’s attention to the need to care for the poor in the society. The day is unique in many ways, apart from the fact that it is set aside to care for the needy, this day also coincides with the anniversary of mother Teresa, a woman widely acclaimed for her love in charity and acts of charity. Acts of charity, whether it is devoting your time and effort or donating a sum of money, are the foundations of human society. As we commensurate today, we take a look at why giving is good. Giving is a Gift for the Giver There is a common misconception that being charitable requires being rich. On the contrary, you do not need to be a billionaire to have the power to give to the needy. A little can go a long way. No matter how much you give you can make a positive influence. And t...

Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa has gone naked for an advert campaign. The entrepreneur is making new moves in the beauty industry and to show her seriousness in the business, the 34-year-old Toke made a bold move to ditch her clothes to pose nude. The radio girl has lauched a product and she shared the photo from the shoot with the caption “When you glow, there is nothing to hide” which she proved with the picture. “Please, must you be naked to prove that point” @dinma_lc posted. “You’re legit one of the biggest hypocrite I’ve ever come across. You preach about Christianity every day but never have I seen you in church.  You spend even your Passover nights at clubs, yet you’ll come online and be preaching the gospel, gospel according to Toke right? Don’t try and streamline the word of God to how it fits you and your business.  You have pursued materialistic things to the point of this to sell a product”, was the comment...

It is Thursday! and Thursdays are for throwbacks.  Recently, I got an opportunity to see this movie again. Interestingly, I decided to remind you the story... Sister Act is a 1992 American musical comedy and one of the most financially successful comedies of the early 1990s. Directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Joseph Howard, the film stars Whoopi Goldberg as a Reno lounge singer who has been put under protective custody in a San Francisco convent of Poor Clares and has to pretend to be a nun when a mob boss puts her on his hit list. Summary Sister Act is basically about a Reno lounge singer named Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses her mobster boyfriend killing an employee. The film opens at St. Anne’s Academy, a California Catholic school where Deloris is scolded for wisecracking and disobeying rules. The setting then changes to the present day, where Deloris Van Cartier is a lounge singer working in a casino called The Moonlight Lounge, locate...

The Menace of Corporate begging in Lagos

Image
By Praise Olowe Just when I thought the issue of corporate begging had seized in Lagos, some of my recent encounters within the Lagos metropolis has got me re thinking. Corporate beggars seem to be back in town and this time around, they are back in re branded styles. Street begging is not new in Nigeria, and it majorly involves visibly disadvantaged people, who line major roads to beg for money. You would agree with me that, seeing a good looking man who is all dressed up in tuxedo, carrying a fancy brief case and wearing a pair of shoe so well polished that you can almost see your reflection in them on the street of Lagos is not at all a concern. However, it becomes one when this corporately dressed man, walks up to a lady not to make advances, but to seek assistance backing it up with a really pathetic story. This was my experience a few days ago, at the Oshodi area of Lagos. This handsome looking guy, walked up to me and said: (not the exact word...
