Reverie

Image
It was a perfect day in Victoria Island Lagos. There was beauty, laughter, joy and dancing all round the big bright Mercy hall. It was Vivian Sissy's wedding ceremony. The room was filled with smiles, happiness and cheer but there is one dark spot from where a lady stared. Helen Grace was thinking about Mike again. Mike Martins, a smart young man with broad shoulders and cute eyes who she met few years back at a gathering like this. She just sat there, thinking about a moment like this when she first saw Mike and how he walked her to the stage as she stirs at everyone around the 'tiny place' . Helen walked over to the window and reflected on her sunny surroundings. She had always loved beautiful Lagos with its watery wild waters. It was a place that encouraged her tendency to feel relaxed. But with this noise, she can not help but brood. Then she saw something in the distance or rather someone. It was the charming Figure of the Martin she just pictured. Hele...

Book Review- The Lion and The Jewel

Image
The lion and the Jewel is a playwright written by Nobel Prize Laureate, Wole Soyinka . The play captures the story involving four characters – Sidi, Lakunle, Baroka, and Sadiku. The narrative hinges on an unusual love-triangle. Lakunle is a schoolteacher who wants to marry Sidi but refuses to pay a bride-price for her, ostensibly because it is one of many outdated practices of the Yoruba people that do not match his civilised opinions. Sidi, the “jewel” of the title, seems to return Lakunle’s affection but is constantly angered by his condescension towards her as an “uneducated bush girl” and by his highfalutin phrasemaking. Moreover, her sense of self-worth according to “traditional” criteria for desirability as a bride-to-be is (ironically) increased by her prominence in a recently-published book of photographs taken by a visitor to the village. When the bale or autocratic head of the village, Baroka seeks a new bride to add to his harem, Sidi’s growing rep...

The Grand and Weak Love

Image
Whose Love is that? I think I know. Its owner is quite sad though. It really is a tale of woe, I watch her frown. I cry hello. She gives her Love a shake, And sobs until the tears make. The only other sound's the break, Of distant waves and birds awake. The Love is Grand, weak and deep, But she has promises to keep, Until then she shall not sleep. She lies in bed with ducts that weep. She rises from her bitter bed, With thoughts of sadness in her head, She idolises being dead. Facing the day with never ending dread.       CHEERFUL   Follow on Twitter @olowepraise Instagram @cheerful_olowe Facebook @praise olowe
