#WCW – Woman Crush Wednesday: Joke Silva






Hi! We hope you are having a great Wednesday. It's woman crush Wednesday!! Today is dedicated to an Ace actress and director. She is Joke Silva.

Joke Silva is a Nigerian Actress, Director, Business Woman & beautiful wife of veteran Nigerian Actor; Olu Jacobs. She is also known as the "godmother" of Nollywood. The actress isn't just the "godmother", she is also a role model to many young Nigerian women who aspire to go into the film industry.

Joke was born in Lagos, Nigeria, into a family of four. She attended Holy Child College in Lagos, she studied English at the University of Lagos after which she relocated to England and studied drama at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
During her days at the University of Lagos, she belonged to a cultural group which comprised of the likes of Bode Osanyin, Stella Monye and others.


She began her career in film in the early 1990s. In 1998, she starred in a major role opposite Actors; Colin Firth & Nia Long in the British Canadian film; “The secret laughter of women”. In 2012, the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime appointed Joke Silva as goodwill ambassador and her tenure lasted 3 years. Her role was focused on the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.

Joke is Married to veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs with 2 children. The couple met in 1981 at the National Theatre, Lagos during the 21st Independence anniversary. She is Director of Studies at the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts , while her husband chairs it. Lufodo Academy is one of several assets the couple own as part of the Lufodo Group, including Lufodo Productions, Lufodo Consult, and Lufodo Distribution. She is also the pioneer managing director of Malete Film Village, in association with Kwara State University.
          


The prolific actress has featured in so many Nigerian movies and home videos. She has received several awards and nominations for her work as an actress including the awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2nd Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2006, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 4th Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2008 among many others.


Joke Silva is our “Woman Crush” because of her hard work over the years and huge contribution in grooming young talents in the film industry. I admire the fact that she is a philanthropist, a strong supporter of women's emancipation and empowerment.
